ARIZONA'S CENTENNIAL
February 10, 11 and 12, 2012

Yuma Civic Center

SPECIAL FEATURES THIS YEAR

CALIFORNIA HERITAGE DANCERS ... In keeping with our theme "Celebrate Arizona's Centennial" our Festival will have a demonstration by the California Heritage Dancers.  Dressed in period costume, this group demonstrates dancing as it was in America's past.  Don't miss this special treat.  Here is a short video of a demonstration by the dancers at last year's California State Square Dance Convention.  To learn more about this group, view their website:  California Heritage Dancers

Saturday's Edwardian Era Dance

Picture
In keeping with our theme, we encourage dancers to dress in period clothing for the Saturday evening dance.  This is not a requirement...square dance apparel is fine...but we thought many would have fun dressing in this manner.
Also know as the Gibson Girl era, dresses were long, natural form, a-line skirted and had lots of lace!
The Edwardian man would have sported a good suit, hat and tie with coordinating waistcoat (vest), drss shirt with club style or detachable collar and pocket square.

You can download a pdf file here that describes the apparel in more detail and gives several online links to view.

Dance in the Prison Guard House

Picture
YUMA TERRITORIAL PRISON

NOTE:  We have had such a great response to dancing at the prison, we are no longer taking sign-ups, due to guard house weight restrictions.  On July 1, 1876, the first seven inmates entered the Territorial Prison at Yuma and were locked into the new cells they had built themselves. The prison played a huge part in making Yuma's history.  At one time, there was a square dance club known as the Yuma Jailbirds.
On Saturday afternoon, during Festival, you have a chance to dance in the Prison Guard House at 2 p.m. as a part of our Celebrate Arizona's Centennial.  Bob Stutevoss will call the dance.  The number of dancers will be limited.
"Jailbird" dangles will be for sale at Festival. Dancers are requested to wear square dance attire.  This will be a great opportunity to see the old jail and get some unique photos!  (If you wish to tour the prison while there, you will need to purchase admission at the gift shop.)
Admission to the dance will be free with your Festival Ribbon ($7 if purchased at single workshop price),  but dancers will have to provide for their own transportation (possibly carpooling with other dancers.)  The Prison is about 6 miles from the Civic Center. There will also be ongoing workshops at the Civic Center throughout Saturday afternoon.
